The ROC-A examination is based on ISED’s RIC-21 study guide. It may include written, oral and practical exercises. The goal is to demonstrate that you can operate radiotelephone equipment safely, use correct procedures and understand the regulations that apply to the aeronautical service.

• Clear speech transmission technique and standard phraseology

• Establishing calls, station identification and message handling

• The phonetic alphabet, numbers and signal checks

• Distress, urgency and safety communications

• General radiotelephone operating procedures

• The Radiocommunication Act and regulations that apply to aeronautical service

Know what to expect

The examination can be verbal, written or a combination. It typically includes a practical simulated radio exchange plus questions about operating procedures and regulations. Your examiner will explain the process before testing begins; exam materials are provided only during the supervised appointment.
